A fisherman operating out of a port in Russia’s Arctic north has been fascinating his social media followers with pictures of the weird and wonderful creatures being pulled up from deep in the sea.

The frilled shark is considered a living fossil, because of its primitive, anguilliform (eel-like) physical traits, such as a dark-brown color, amphistyly (the articulation of the jaws to the cranium), and a 2.0 m (6.6 ft)–long body, which has dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins located towards the tail.

One website, Moscow Times, said the pictures might not be a surprise to others who fish in deep waters “but the images are perfectly monstrous to your average land-lover”.
